Title: What do I do when I'm given a key for the wrong game?
Post by: Reecebullet on April 8th, 2017, 02:16 PM
So, I completed a trade to receive Dirt 3, but instead the person sent Dirt 3 Complete Edition. But that isn't the game they listed it as, nor the one I would've traded for, knowing that it wasn't the version that I'm after. And that I owned the C.E version already. So the key they sent me remains unused.

So what do I do? If I don't send over the game from my side of the trade, what happens? It's my first trade here so it makes it even slightly worse.

Cheers!

Usually, platforms like this don't regulate individual trades.
First thing would be to try to work it out with your trade partner.

When importing a large amount of tradable keys, mistakes happen.

There are currently no ways to 'mark' a trade as problematic. There is, however, a board where you can discuss such trades, which IMHO may be a better way to handle them. I'll move that topic over there once I finish my answer.

The Dirt 3 problem is pretty well known. I'd want to say, I know of *no one* on other trading sites that would willingly trade it without being aware of its 'market value' (IIRC, it's because of a problem with real-life wheels not working very well on the Complete Edition).
So, if someone traded you Dirt 3 Complete for something of low value, it's likely they'd be unaware that Dirt 3 is 'different'.

Here's what I'll do: I've tagged your wishlisted copy as 'Do not offer Complete Edition'[1]. This notice will appear on game pages, as well as on your wishlist. I need to enable two-way tag lookups for that notice to appear in offer matches and offer creation pages. But that's a start.
I'm gonna assume the other trader is honest and you are too, and no one should be punished for the confusion. There aren't many people who have Dirt 3 as available, and from what I remember, at least half of those are people who actually own Dirt 3 Complete and think they're doing wishlisters a favor by adding Dirt 3 to their tradables because they don't know it's wanted for different reasons. (Yes, I did that honest mistake too.)

Anyway-- Dirt 3 Complete is so well spread across the trade market, it has little to no value at all, and thus the other trader shouldn't bother.
 1. Yes, since there isn't currently a proper editor for that, that's actually the first custom note on LT. ;)

It is really hard to find these days, but there are key copies floating around, so I can't do much other than try. The offer I sent was simply to get a counter so they could go through what I had - I didn't actually expect them to agree to it.

Thank you for the tag (the first custom note!). I can prove to him/anyone else that the key he provided via PM hasn't been touched, and although he was still pushy about the trade once I'd let him know of the issue, I'm sure it was actually a mistake on his part too.

What should I do about this current trade? Let it expire?

Anyway, cheers for the reply!

I've marked the offer as canceled. Closest thing I have to 'Failed' for now. :P

PS: offers don't expire on LT for now. In fact I'm considering never letting them expire at all. If you receive an offer, it's in your best interest to reply to it as soon as possible. If you don't, then you risk missing out on a good trade if the other item ends up in another trade.

That's it, your custom note will now also show up on offer creation pages, the place where it matters the most :)

Not happy with the new tag colors, though... I'm trying to make it 'easier' to understand which tags are from which trader, but... It kinda sucks.
