Bedtime trading stories
« on March 6th, 2017, 10:23 AM »
I thought it would be fun to have a topic about trading stories.

That is, not trades that failed or anything like that.
Just trades that ended up being weird, funny or funnily disappointing.

I'll start.

Last month I unsubscribed from Humble Monthly after another letdown (for me). I still added the latest early unlock to my tradables in case someone wanted to trade it for a good price meaning I'd get the rest of the bundle for cheap.

Then two weeks ago I got this offer.

"Oh, cool... OP3 was something like 7 or 8€ lowest price, that's a great offer for me. Plus, I was hoping for it to be in the Bandai Namco bundle on week 2 but it wasn't, so it's unlikely to get bundled anytime soon."

So I did the trade.
And then Friday the bundle got unveiled. And it has OP3 in it.
Okay, I thought, now that's the weirdest thing ever. I mean, I was positive it wouldn't be bundled. And there it was.
The trader assured me it was a complete coincidence, as expected.

Eventually I decided I'd just trade and retrade it for some good value, because, well, that's the only worthy game in that bundle.
Guess what? It now has a 2:1 ratio on Barter... As if I was the only person who wanted the game at all.

I think it's a sign. Of what, I don't know. I just like that it's a sign.

Any other good stories you remember?

Another one...

Last night, I acquired Adam Wolfe, a highly-rated hidden object game. High ratio, devotee can confirm I bothered him trying to get that game for months now. (I missed it last Christmas.)

Today, it's in the new Indiegala.

Hehe! Any game will eventually be either in a bundle or considerable reduced price. Some take really long, others much less.

With that said... it is a matter of a time vs money. If you want to wait for that game to be in that condition is entirely possible, however many times it can take too long.
I have games in my list that are not a priority, so when they eventually get to that condition I will be ready for it haha.

Sounds like a good game by the way.

Well, that's the thing: many games actually NEVER get bundled at all.
A simple example: my own game, which I'll grant you isn't on Steam, has never been sold it for less than its actual price. It may be stupid, but I've always believed in the value of work. I considered making a sale for its 20 years, but ended up just sending a blog post.
I've seen many 'older' games that got released years after their initial retail release, and never got sold on sale; mostly casual, niche games. Sometimes these games are 10% off when they get on Steam, and then... Voilà, 0% forever after that.
You can often determine if a game will be bundled by studying the previous games from the same publisher or studio. That's all I can say...
Right now I have a coupon for a game in my wishlist. It was released in 2015, never on sale beyond 25%, never bundled. I'm very likely to buy it with the coupon.

Yes, yes it does ;)
Right up my alley these days. (I used to hate hidden object games but I was completely convinced of their potential value with a couple of games I played recently.)

Another bundle got released today. "Void & Meddler episode 1" is in it. I actually already have it... And even had a spare copy I only traded a couple weeks ago. Looks like I got lucky for that one! But it also has The Little Acre, which I bought last month unbundled!
So, for every little thing for which I'm lucky, I always feel like I'm getting punished for actually buying stuff outside of bundles...

Then again, these are point & click games. They need all the support they can get. Who cares if I lose some money in the process. (Now if the Little Acre guys could simply patch their game to allow skipping dialogue... It's, like, something they've done since the 80's...)

You mean YOUR girlfriend, I'm sure. Don't generalize to everyone. :P

Okay, my bedtime trading story for tonight: well, ironically it *is* bedtime. I'm just so tired, I'm not even going to send offers with the trading system.

The cobbler's children are sometimes the worst shod. So I'm pretty sure I'm gonna miss out on good trades I could have found otherwise. :^^;:

Of course I meant my girlfriend... notice "the girlfriend".
I don't know anything about other people's girlfriend. Best to stay that way :eheh:

I once offered somebody on Barter Aozora Meikyuu for Hate Plus (I know it was kinda unfair, but it was the best thing I had to trade back in the day). A day later I see they made a counter offer and asked for Nightmares from the Deep 3: Davy Jones instead of Aozora Meikyuu. Yup, they asked a really common game for a really rare one, and I'm still amazed I got such a great deal.

Yeah, and more realistically, many new traders simply don't understand those ratio numbers. Which is why they usually get flooded with bad offers, and why I sometimes spent hours teaching the basics to people who were too eager to trade their rare games for multiple bundled games. (One of them even because a very demanding trader later on.)

Hope you did the right thing, gave him Aozora in addition to the HOG, and explained what ratio meant. ;)

Ah, the joys of marketing...
I very rarely use Steamgifts because I don't like +1's and I only want games I wanna play (yeah, I know, but I really hate having 3500 games in my library, including 3200+ I'll never even launch!), but from time to time when there's stuff from my wishlist, I enter giveaways. I never win.
Until yesterday. I won a game called Lily's Epic Quest. An unbundled match 3, my favorite genre, woohoo! EPIC indeed!

............The next day, it gets bundled.
Can you believe it?
It really killed the mood.

And of course that bundle also had 3 games I traded for a week earlier, and with very low wishlist counts so I'm not even sure I'm gonna be able to retrade them, ahah.

Note for later: never bother with rokaplay outside of bundle items again.
